When someone mentions hot gas filters many people will not have a clue what they are talking about, or perhaps some people may associate this with an industry that specializes in chemical processing and waste material incineration. These are in fact a very important method of filtering harmful gasses from being exposed into the atmosphere, in which the filters themselves are normally made from ceramic parts.
One would normally see these in a large factory, where other factors which cause toxic waste gas to build allows the factory to expel the gas without harming the environment. The ceramic filter elements can withstand a very temperature as the expelling of materials reach up to around 1000 degrees Celsius, making it important for the filters to maintain its structure throughout the process. The hot gas filters are so called for their strong ability to filter out harmful or toxic particles whilst expelling the gas, within very high temperatures and within high speed impact.
The ceramic filters will hold its structure well as long as the chamber or housing it is fitted in is not fabricated with mild steel. The long tubes that the filters are in are flanged at one end and closed shut at the end, and are hung vertically within the vessel. They are hung by attaching them to the header plates, separating the clean compartments from the dirty compartments. When the hot gas is released into the vessel, it is then sucked through the filter and the particles are then deposited onto the outer part of the tube.
After this point there are sharp pulses of gas being blown back down the inside of the filter elements, resulting in short moments of reversal flows. This is important to allow for the solid particles to detach itself from the tube, as there will be a layer of particles that have accumulated. They then fall into a hopper section where they are then released. The particles do not detach in one go and come off in patches because of the varying strength in the pulses. This may mean that the tubes would later need to be scrubbed.
The filter capacity of the vessel depends upon the amount of filter elements contained within it, which is why many of the vessel designs will vary greatly. Larger vessels are ideal for animal carcass incineration, where the hot gas filters are evenly fixed. The standard design usually takes on smaller incineration processes and may not require a very high level of gas pulsation. The filters are used frequently making it important to keep them clean, well maintained, checked thoroughly and replaced immediately when needed. This is to ensure the solids are being disposed of effectively.
To prevent further chemical reactions, the gasses are treated beforehand, after which the gas is cooled. Alternatively a sorbent may be added if there are acid gasses being used, such as lime that reacts well with most acid gasses. Most ceramic filters can be made with carbon steel if not stainless steel as long as they are very strong.
