A Few Green Leaves

A Few Green Leaves

$10.95

Completed barely two months before her death, Pym’s last novel is an incisive and wry portrait of life in an English village in Oxfordshire. It is also certain to be considered by many her masterwork. In A Few Green Leaves the author combines the rural setting of her earliest novels with many of the themes–and even some characters–of her later ones. Switching points of view among man…

Childerley: Nature and Morality in a Country Village (Morality and Society Series)

$22.65

In Childerley a twelfth-century church rises above the rolling quilt of pastures and grain fields. Volvos and tractors share the winding country roads. Here, in this small village two hours from London, stockbrokers and stock-keepers live side by side in thatched cottages, converted barns, and modern homes. Why do these villagers find country living so compelling? Why, despite our urban lives, do s…

Village Bells

Village Bells

$4.69

Since the Renaissance, France has been known as the country of ringing towns. By the 19th century, according to Alain Corbin, a renowned professor of contemporary history at the Sorbonne, a French village community could not live without its bells. Village peals were symbols and objects of both ecclesiastic and civic pride, and played such an integral role in town life that, according to Corb…

An outside chance for fun

Visiting country parks might not be top of your Nottingham to-do list, but the city hides many of its most fascinating features in these ancient estates. You may have Sherwood Forest and Nottingham Castle on your radar, but the city has many other rural highlights.

Rushcliffe Country Park in north-west Nottingham was purpose-built in 1989 on the site of a former bomb factory and ammunitions bunker! A natural habitat for wildlife and open space for recreational activities, five miles of pathways cross landscaped areas, grassland, wildflower meadows, National Heritage trails, community gardens, woodlands and a two-hectare man-made lake. The park hosts several annual events including a kite festival with vintage fairground rides, farmers market and craft fair.

For something a little more historic, head to Wollaton Park with the 16th-century Wollaton Hall. The Park stretches over 500 acres and houses a herd of Red and Fallow deer, while the Hall is now home to Nottingham’s natural history museum collection. With an industrial museum in its out-buildings, Wollaton is now best known for major outdoor events including music concerts and festivals.

An altogether more serene destination is The Arboretum, a Victorian botanical garden and closest greenspace to the city centre. Although designed as somewhere for locals to relax, The Arboretum is often buzzing with festivals, demonstrations and markets. Besides the trees that give the park its name, you will encounter grade II-listed gems including a Bell Tower, bandstand and circular aviary.

The modest-sounding Forest Recreation Ground one mile from the city centre is home to the 800-year-old Goose Fair. Originally the most southerly point of Sherwood Forest, it has many claims to fame including being the first home of Nottingham (Forest) Football Club in 1865 and first site of the city’s racecourse. Leisure facilities include hard-surface courts and grass pitches.

If you’re after something a more energetic, Colwick Country Park two miles from the city centre is home to Nottingham’s horse and dog-racing stadia. Beyond its flagship facilities, this former gravel works has fishing, watersports, cycling, horse riding, an activity centre and a magnificent 14th-century Georgian mansion.

If you’re heading up to Sherwood Forest, stop at Clumber Park, a country park with its roots in the Middle Ages. Clumber House has been a monastic property, a deer park, hunting lodge and residential mansion. Stretching over 3,800 acres, Clumber Park mixes woods with open heath, rolling farmland and an 87-acre serpentine lake. Hire a bicycle, tandem or adult tricycle to cover the miles of paths and cycle tracks.

Get a glimpse of Nottingham past at Bestwood Country Park. Its lakes were purpose-built to serve the village’s old water mills and its Winding Engine House is a stunning example of the site’s industrial archaeology and proud memorial to Nottingham’s mining heritage.

Whether you’ve got the urge to find some tranquility or fancy tracing the steps (or following the spirits) of some of Nottingham’s most renowned residents, take a break from the bustle and taste the greenery of this city’s unexpected countryside.
